The EMERGING DESIGN CHALLENGE was put forth by my company in January 2021. Teams were given an option of two sites in Los Angeles, CA, a limitation on square footage and height, and asked the question: "what will design look like post-COVID?"

Our team of three designed Terra Cosmo and took first place. We envisioned a multi-purpose gathering place with retail, food, entertainment, and the flexibility to be rented out for events. We opted to retain the existing building shell and develop new construction around it.

Enclosure without enclosure The architectural trellis unifies the new and the old into one open-air courtyard and retail area. Made of terracotta, portions of the vertical bars have integrated water streaming down the face to create a cooling effect for the patrons.

Make online local Technology provides the opportunity to make the future of online retail locally-focused, connecting transactions to real, tangible places and people.

Adaptability Flexible seating and display cases can move into the open space or street for events. The space is available for neighborhood residents to gather or host live music, weddings, or other events. Large chandelier-like art installations can lower to create private dining capsules.
